INTERACT – Investigating the Impact of Climate Change on Emerging Pollutants in Drinking Water

The INTERACT project aims to explore how climate change affects the quality of drinking water, focusing on the presence of emerging pollutants and their potential role as endocrine disruptors (EDCs). In the face of increasing drought and extreme weather events, particularly in Sicily, ensuring safe and clean water has become a critical public health and environmental challenge. The study targets substances that are still poorly understood but may pose risks to human health, including pharmaceuticals (salicylic acid, 17-ß estradiol), industrial chemicals (nonylphenol, bisphenol A, PFAS), and particulate matter (microplastics, nanoplastics, metallic nanoparticles). Through a multidisciplinary approach, the project involves seasonal water sampling in the province of Catania, biological assays to assess endocrine activity, and statistical analyses to estimate health risks. Key partners include the Environmental and Food Hygiene Laboratory at the University of Catania, SIDRA SpA, and the Cyprus University of Technology. Expected outcomes include a deeper understanding of population exposure to EDCs, detailed profiling of contaminants in drinking water, and scientific support for implementing new EU regulations on water quality.
